Sportpark Het Schenge, in Goes, now Complete with sustainable skatepark and pump track
The Urban Sports Park in Goes is the result of an intensive collaboration in a construction team with the municipality of Goes and subcontractor Velosolutions. Nine Yards served as the main contractor, working closely with local users through a participation process to ensure the design fully met the community's needs. In addition to the new skatepark, a pump track was built, making the park a complete sports facility. Innovations such as natural water management, a drinking water station, and a shelter with a green sedum roof make the park not only functional but also sustainable and future-proof.
The needs of the city Goes
The goal was to design a multifunctional park that appeals to local athletes while also being future-proof and environmentally friendly. To achieve this, a participation process was initiated in which CIOS, SMWO, the municipality of Goes, Velosolutions, and local athletes were closely involved, ensuring the park seamlessly meets their needs.
In addition to sports facilities, the design had to comply with strict environmental and sustainability standards. One of the main requirements was that the park should not add extra water to the sewage system. To address this, Nine Yards designed a tree plan, fully aligned with the 'manual trees' from the Norminstituut. This plan included the planting of approximately 30 trees, which not only provide shade and aesthetic value but also contribute to water retention, ensuring the park doesn’t place additional strain on the surrounding area.
Additionally, a large ditch, known as the wadi, was incorporated to naturally drain excess water. The project also had to consider archaeological restrictions, such as a historic motte, where digging was limited to a depth of 60 cm. This ensured that the park was designed with respect for both the natural and historical environment.
The realization by Nine Yards
The design was realized with a clear focus on functionality, sustainability, and social interaction. When viewed from above, the circular layout stands out, with round seating areas integrated throughout the park. This unique design, mirrored on both sides of the park, is adapted to the existing landscape, creating a natural gathering space where people can come together.
Beneath the surface, there is a lot happening too. In addition to a specialized crate system that ensures optimal underground root growth for the trees, we had to consider archaeological restrictions. A historic motte lies beneath the park, limiting excavation to no deeper than 60 cm. By taking these factors into account, the park was designed with respect for both the natural and historical environment.
Beyond the greenery, Nine Yards also added practical features such as a shelter with a sustainable sedum roof to protect athletes from rain, and additional lighting to ensure the park can be used in the evenings. Every detail, down to the placement of trash bins and other furniture, was thoughtfully designed to create a complete and accessible environment.
