From water management to design, a new and modern skatepark for Geel
At Nine Yards Skateparks, we are proud to launch the brand-new skatepark in Geel, which we have realized with speed and precision. Located next to the youth center De Vonk, this skatepark offers skaters of all ages a challenging and aesthetically pleasing space. Built in record time, the park features unique elements such as the rare Astray obstacle and a specially designed bowl corner with pool tiles. With thoughtful sustainable water management solutions, this skatepark not only enhances the local community but also sets a benchmark for modern design and efficiency.
The needs of the local goverment in Geel
The city of Geel aimed to renew and transform the outdated skatepark into a modern, sustainable, and appealing public space for local youth. A crucial challenge was the tight timeline: the project needed to be completed within two months. Additionally, it was essential to actively involve local skaters in the design process to ensure that the park truly met their needs and preferences. Through an extensive participation process with local skate groups, the city gathered valuable input, resulting in a design that is both functional and beloved by the community.
The built by Nine Yards
Nine Yards Skateparks began construction of skatepark Geel in April 2024 and completed the project in a record time of two months, thanks to an efficient collaboration with 'Boons Grondwerken' and an effective design created in partnership with Slingermade.
Sustainability was a key focus: we installed infiltration crates for natural water retention and implemented a natural infiltration system beneath the bowl. The stormwater drainage from the unique Astray obstacle is connected to a coconut fiber drainage pipe, which directs additional water to a central tree, providing shade and enhancing the park's natural appearance.
The design, inspired by the round shapes of the city park, features striking obstacles such as the rare Astray obstacle and a specially designed bowl corner with pool tiles. These elements make the skatepark both functional and visually appealing, ensuring a harmonious integration with its surroundings.
